Places to see: Saint Petersburg
If you were reading some of my early posts you know by know that I am half Russian and I have lived for a while in Saint Petersburg. For me, Saint Petersburg is a magic place and I guess that the best memories of my life have been made in Saint Petersburg. I have learned Russian there, made friends and found love.
I arrived in Saint Petersburg on the 4th of February year X. I remember that I had never seen so much snow in my entire life. And the cold, you could feel the could entering your blood vessels and your bones. It was something I had never experienced before. All around the city there were these immense masses of ice and snow. It snowed everyday and along with the fact that the day was only 7 hours long, it made everything seem collosal. Moreover, the temperatures were constantly lower than minus 25 degrees Celsius, making it difficult to step outside and depressing as well. But once you step outside and walk through the beautiful streets of the city, you see the people's faces. Their faces contain something timeless that is augmentated by the cold and the scenery: beautiful women in long fur coats and men with big blue eyes and moustaches wearing their big fur hats. They seem as a window through history.
As suddenly as the winter comes in Saint Petersburg, the winter goes away. It actually is forced to go away because the authorities take care of getting the snow out of the city (during the communist regime it was actually rumoured that the Russians had heaters underneath the streets to help the ice mealt). I didn't do much sight seeing during the winter, I just made a lot of friends. I waited to see the city in the Spring. Spring comes somewhere in April, well we call it spring but I think it resembles to what the Spanish might call December. Anyway, we are not complaining. Never Complain in Russia! The city slowly becomes a fountain of youth, beauty and joy. The parks go green and the vegetation sparks. Son enough come the white nights when the night is forgotten and you have around 18 hours of sun everyday!

Russian Fashion: My ethnicity
I believe that everyone should embrace their culture and incorporate it in their style. I am of Russian ethnicity, I have lived in Saint Petersburg and I would like to share my culture with you.
When it comes to fashion I think that the main word is OPULENCE, Russians love rich colors that are combined with stones and expensive materials. They are all about exageration and about showing of. Russian women are so beautiful not because they are born that way, but because they are very careful about what they put on themselves and they dedicate a lot of time in taking care of themselves.
In modeling, the Eastern European look is very appreciated right now and an example of that is the supermodel Natalia Vodianova. She has found in fashion not only a hobby, but an escape from poverty. After having to sell fruit on the street she started her modeling career at 15 and her wish to succeed was so big that she learned English in only 3 months
On the designer scene I have noticed Yulia Sarkisova as an emerging designer that stays true to the Russian traditions. Here are a few images from her Spring/Summer 2010 Collection presented at the Moscow Fashion Week.
On a international level, the Russian fashion style has been celebrated in 2009 by Channel in a collection that exuberated the Russion spirit and traditions. It was the Russian life being updated.
